Total Eclipse of the Moon
Introduction
A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the night of Wednesday, February 20/21, 2008. The entire event is visible from South America and most of North America (on Feb. 20) as well as Western Europe, Africa, and western Asia (on Feb. 21). During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown and (rarely) very dark gray.
An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
If only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen. However, if the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs. Today is World Cancer Day
In 2006, cancer killed more people in developing countries than malaria and typhoid combined. In addition to these deaths, the number of people globally diagnosed with cancer rose at alarming rates; particularly in Asian countries where increases in smoking and environmental conditions serve as the main cause.
Today, we, at the National Foundation for Cancer Research, in conjunction with our world-wide colleagues, wish to pause and recognize February 4th, 2008, as World Cancer Day a new and promising international collaboration between philanthropists, charities, and researchers, around the world to find cures and raise the awareness that cancer is a growing global problem.
By working together, we hope that by raising public awareness of World Cancer Day, we can shed light on the number of global cancer deaths - particularly those due to second-hand smoke - and increase the possibility of coming together to find cures for cancer.
As a result, NFCR is pleased to announce yet another way you can help fight the global war on cancer. We have partnered with the Nobel-Prize winning International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to establish the PACT Fund at NFCR - a unique fund that will support the IAEA and their Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT) in developing countries and enable developing countries to develop newer and more effective diagnostic equipment. Early detection of cancer has shown a dramatic increase in a patients ability to beat cancer and this is our goal with PACT.
PACT’s focus is essential. In fact, if current smoking patterns in developing countries continue, the number of tobacco-related deaths in the world will rise to 8.3 million deaths per year by 2030 and more than 70% of these deaths will occur in developing countries. Dr. Massoud Samiei, Head of the PACT Programme Office, states “Our priority through these projects is to demonstrate that cancer is a preventable and a curable disease. If sufficient funds were available millions of lives could be saved, even with relatively simple solutions."
