I did not think that coal was healthy...

Are you in on the truth?

Learn the truth about coal at CoalIsNotTheAnswer.org. Despite the coal industry’s $40 million slick advertising campaign to mask the harmful and polluting nature of coal fired power plants, do not fall for it!

Click here to come up with a new slogan for coal. One that tells the truth.

Hundreds of comments have flooded in to the website from people telling their own story about coal. Here are a few of the most powerful:

Cathy in Ohio: I worked for a respiratory doctor and we would get coal miners in our office for treatment with black lung disease, emphysema. Poor souls had worked all their lives and basically gave their lives to that miserable coal mine. Their families felt helpless because it was the only job they knew and they worked and suffered. My utility bill was horribly expensive and they burned coal for our power and we paid dearly. There's got to be a better way for all involved.

Bill in Wyoming: I live in Wyoming, and we are coal country, and I live and breathe coal, but I do agree we have many, many options, so who will take that leap into the future? So instead of mining coal, we can get good jobs building wind turbines, solar panels, and set up incentives for research and development in alternative renewable energy sources. We can do it!

John in West Virginia: I grew up with coal in WV. For people who like to continue breathing, coal is not an answer. The strip miners are also polluting the beautiful state of my birth, making it impossible for people to live anywhere near their mining operations. Coal is part of the problem, and no part of the solution.

Real people, telling real stories about how coal affects their lives and communities. Let’s make sure that these are the types of messages that get out to the public, not the misleading sound bites the coal industry uses to mask the truth.

Submit your slogan today and let the country know what you really think of coal.

Spyware/adware trouble?

How to Remove Adware and Spyware
By Mary Landesman, About.com

Getting stubborn adware and spyware off your PC can be frustrating. However, there are steps you can take to make the process easier and more effective. If your system is heavily infested, you'll need access to a clean computer to download the necessary tools. If you don't have a second computer, ask a friend to download the tools for you and burn them to a cd. If you plan to use a USB drive to transfer the downloaded files, make sure both your computer and your friend's computer have autorun disabled1.

1. Disconnect from the Internet
Close all open browser windows and applications (including email) and then disconnect your PC from the Internet. If you can access the back of the computer, the easiest thing to do is just remove the phone line or cable connecting the PC to the modem or router. If the back of the computer isn't easily accessible, you can remove the ethernet cable or phone line from router or modem.

2. Try a Traditional Uninstall
A suprising number of applications labeled as adware and spyware have fully functioning uninstallers that will cleanly remove the program. Before moving on to more complex steps, start with the easiest route and check the Add/Remove Programs list in the Windows Control Panel2. If the unwanted program is listed, simply highlight it and click the Remove button. In Windows Vista, the Add/Remove Programs feature is listed in Control Panel as Programs and Features. After removing the adware or spyware via Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs, reboot the computer. Make sure you reboot after the uninstall, even if you aren't prompted to do so.

3. Scan Your Computer

After you've disconnected from the Internet, removed any adware or spyware listed in Add/Remove Programs, and rebooted the computer, the next step is to run a full system scan using an up-to-date antivirus scanner. If your scanner will allow it, can the system in Safe Mode3. If you don't have antivirus installed, select from one of these top-rated antivirus scanners4 or from one of these free antivirus scanners5. If prompted, allow the scanner to clean, quarantine, or delete6 as appropriate.

4. Using SmitFraudFix7

Much of today's spyware is delivered via the Zlob family of Trojan downloaders. The free SmitFraudFix tool does a good job of removing many variants of Zlob-related adware and spyware. For download and usage instructions, see: SmitFraudFix Removes Zlob and Other Pests8.

5. Get Clear Access to the Problem

While scanning the system in Safe Mode9 is good practice, it may not be enough to thwart some malware. If the adware or spyware persists despite the above efforts, you'll need to get access to the drive without allowing the adware or spyware to load. The most effective means to get clean access to the drive is to use a BartPE Bootable CD10. Once you've booted to the BartPE CD, you can access the file manager, locate the installed antivirus and rescan the system. Or, locate the offending files and folders and manually delete them.

6. Undo the Residual Damage

After removing the active infestation, you'll need to make sure the adware or spyware won't simply reintegrate itself when the computer is reconnecting to the Internet.

* Before reconnecting, reset your browser start and home pages. (See Resetting Internet Explorer Settings11).
* Ensure your HOSTS file hasn't been hijacked. (See Protecting the HOSTS file12)
* Make sure undesirable websites haven't been added to your Trusted Sites Zone. (See How to Check Your Trusted Sites List13)

7. Preventing Adware and Spyware14
To avoid future adware and spyware infections, be discriminating about what programs you install on your PC. If you see an offer for a program that seems to good to be true, research it first using your favorite search engine. Make sure your Web browser security15 is up to snuff, keep your system fully patched, and follow these adware and spyware prevention tips16.

Happiest place on earth? Denmark.

According to a scientist in England, Denmark came out on top as being the happiest place on earth. "When people are asked if they are happy with their lives, people in countries with good healthcare, a higher GDP [gross domestic product] per capita and access to education were much more likely to report being happy." Let's get working on this.....

Check out this video link for a documentary on how the Bush administration constructed a mechanism to propel the nation to war, how President Bush and his administration skillfully manipulated language and facts, how the Bush administration misrepresented and distorted intelligence in making the case for war and the explanation of the misleading 'mythic reality' created by the Bush administration to persuade the public to support a war against Iraq.

Vice Presidential Debate

The debate that everyone seems to be calling a "joke" and should provide some lame moments between VP candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin will be held tomorrow night at 9p. Red Sox vs. Patriots

I noticed that the New England Patriots are playing at the same time as the Boston Red Sox today. As I have been getting into following these teams again, my first reaction was, "Oh no!" but then changed to, "Nice."

I wonder if John Henry and Robert Kraft have a hand at televising these games simultaneously for a nice little rivalry to see which fans pay attention to whom.....

Feeling Tired and Run Down? It Could Be the Lights

My buddy Sean shared this article by Warren E. Leary with me. It definitely got me thinking about those that I know who have trouble sleeping, including myself sometimes, though I have at least one source who can verify that I can sleep anywhere! Anyway...

"Researchers say they have found that normal levels of indoor lighting, and not just very bright light, can reset the human biological clock, a finding they say indicates that many people in industrialized countries may be constantly sleep deprived and in a permanent state of jet lag.

A five-year study of human response to light in the ranges found in modern homes and offices indicates that the modern shifting of night to day with artificial lighting may have profound effects that were previously unsuspected."

Televandals in DC

Televandals played in Vienna, VA, last Monday for the disreputable Emergenza festival and were fucking brilliant. They were the buzz of the night. Comments ranged from "amazing," "awesome" and "this is the kind of music I love" to having the next and last band of the night being upset to go on after Televandals.

Unfortunately, Televandals did not win the competition. The missing-in-action judges seemed to favor the band with little fan support. I refer to them this way because they did not even announce the judges, what their qualifications were or even show them on stage like they did in Boston. Apparently a band competing in Emergenza will not win in-the-end regardless of your fanbase or skills. Televandals went into the competition knowing that Emergenza had a bad reputation, having been told about that reputation but deciding to do it anyway. It worked out great in the end, however, because they introduced themselves to a new market and new fans who look forward to their return.

Here is a clip of Televandals opening their set with "Hate Yourself." Thank you to Jen for the video!

Televandals are not quite done.....

This evening at The Paradise Rock Club, Televandals put on a performance that helped them clinch a victory at the Emergenza Regional Finals in Boston. Between the crowd reaction and judicial vote, they came in first and are on their way to Washington, DC, for the next round tomorrow night. It will be a wild ride but worth it, perhaps, just to get out there in a new market.

The (short, but sweet) set list:
Hate Yourself
Downpour
Molotov
Good for Nothing

On another note, George Carlin passed away today and may he rest in peace.

Here's a nifty Q&A with Televandals for those of you interested. You all should have been there last night at the 'dise because they put on an inspired performance!! Music Rocks / Bamboozle

I have not done a good job to update this but here goes.....

So Wednesday I went to Lowell with Annie and Phil to see Jimmy Eat World and Paramore. The crowd was stupidly ridiculous and distracting but of the parts of JEW's set that I did see, it was fantastic.

Last night I went to Hartford with Annie to see MxPx (who rocked) play in between Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Chiodos (who both fucking sucked). The Webster Theater has a side stage for local/small bands to play so we caught this band--Tiny Machines--play and they sounded so much better than the main bands (less MxPx, who still rocked).

And for the big finale, this weekend I am going with Annie and my sister Kara to Bamboozle in New Jersey for a weekend of music! Here is the list of bands I hope to see, et al.....

Saturday May 3rd
3:15 - 3:45 MAYLENE & THE SONS OF DISASTER
4:00 - 4:30 LESS THAN JAKE
5:30 - 6:00 MXPX
6:15 - 6:45 A DAY TO REMEMBER
7:30 - 8:00 ZOX
8:45 - 9:30 JIMMY EAT WORLD

Sunday May 4th
12:10 - 12:40 FINCH
1:10 - 1:40 ALL TIME LOW
2:30 - 3:00 FOUR YEAR STRONG
3:40 - 4:10 ANTI-FLAG
4:40 - 5:10 THE BOUNCING SOULS
5:15 - 5:45 STREET DOGS
6:00 - 6:30 THE RECEIVING END OF SIRENS
6:15 - 6:50 THRICE
7:25 - 8:00 THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES
8:15 - 8:45 INSPECTER 7

Televandals! Televandals!

Televandals played Paper at Harper's Ferry last night. While it was a short set, it was an awesome one. There was a modest crowd there and those new to the sounds of Televandals were definitely digging it. For those of you that missed it, you certainly did miss out!!

Capital Punishment

Here's the article: linky

If the death penalty is so righteous, then I must ask, do those delivering death still wear masks to conceal their identity? The argument that the Supreme Court debated involved the humane nature of lethal injection but overall with all capital punishment, I think that the righteousness of it is lacking. Yes, you could be getting rid of the guy that did terrible things, but is it better to get rid of these people not fit for society to free up space in our world? And yes, fulfill an "eye for an eye" mentality. Or is it better to at least keep them around in case they are incorrectly judged? Perhaps learn something from a man put to death in order to learn what makes a person like that tick. I cannot speak for others. I just know that I do not agree with putting people to death, especially in such a fixed scenario, and I could never kill someone anyway.

I think that it would be more useful to send those individuals put to death or put to life in prison to be placed on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan to at least do something to help us out instead of uselessly dying in a seat. If ever we had another D-Day like the Invasion of Normandy, I would like to see those members of death row be forced to run the gambit on those beaches and let them die there in front of the real soldiers we would lose. But I guess I am just dreaming that up, anyway.....

Separate shows, together goodness

There is also The Pill @ Great Scott so who knows exactly what I will go for.....

Best Performances Ever

I have decided to quickly jot down the best shows that I have ever been to, in chronological order.....

Jane's Addiction, Lollapalozza 2003, Tweeter Center - It was amazing to see Jane's before they broke up for the last time and they were phenomenal!

Green Day, 2005, Mullins Center - One of the most fun shows I ever went to.

Coldplay, 2005, Tweeter Center - I could not believe the stage performance and lighting. It was crazy. I even high-fived Chris Martin!

Incubus, 2007, BofA Pavilion - The feeling you got from the band and the crowd reaction was something like I had never seen before. It was incredible and loud!

Dropkick Murphys, September 30, 2007, Avalon - The last Avalon show ever. It was my first DKM show and to put this short, it was the show that makes me consider DKM my favorite band to see live.

IAMX, Oct 18, 2007, Great Scott - An unexpectedly terrific show, Chris Corner (IAMX) put on a great performance and I hope to see him again.

VAST, Feb 12, 2007, Harper's Ferry - A simply awesome show. The band sounded great and was near perfect!

Saturday, March 29, 2008

Wild Zero Tonight!!

For those of you interested, Wild Zero is playing the Middle East Upstairs tonight. I highly recommend checking this show out. I have seen the band before and they rock!!!

About last night...

Normally I "advertise" shows before I go to them but last night was not planned out as usual but I thought that I would note it here for my own record. While there were a few shows to choose from, I ended up going to Great Scott to see The Shapes (from NY) and Aloud. It was a solid show and random, personally, because some friends showed up unexpectedly including all of Televandals!

Avenue Q

I am planning to see the musical Avenue Q tonight at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. I saw some skits of it online and it's like an adult version of Sesame Street. I never go to stage productions anymore, so this should be interesting.....

Friday Night Fun

What to do? What to do? What to do? We have a questionable band, Banger, playing tonight at the Middle East Downstairs and a potential party to attend near my place. I say that the band is questionable because I am not familiar with them (I have no had the chance to check them out online, either) but a friend showed interest and I am always game for checking out new bands. As always, let me know if you are looking for something to do tonight. Yes, that means YOU!

I am going to Harper's Ferry tonight for the Pink Spiders show. They are playing with Horrorpops and Steve E Nix & the Cute Lepers. Doors @ 6p.

If not for the Pink Spiders, I would go see Junius @ Great Scott.

Or, I could also go see Sia @ the 'dise. I randomly picked up her album, Colour the Small One, when Virgin was going out of business on Newbury Street. Later on I found out that she did vocal work with Zero 7, whom I really like, so it would have been cool to see her live. This is actually the second time she has come to Boston and I still have not seen her.

The Dreaming tonight @ Harper's Ferry!

I hopefully will get in to see The Dreaming play tonight @ Harper's Ferry. This band is the new band of Christopher Hall, the former lead singer of Stabbing Westward.
